3 is an upcoming Tamil film directed by Aishwarya Dhanush, who makes her directorial debut with the film. It stars her husband Dhanush along with Shruti Haasan. The film which is produced by Dhanush's father Kasthuri Raja, features music scored by Anirudh Ravichander, a relative of Aishwarya while the cinematography is handled by Velraj. The film is currently in its production stage and is expected to release in January 2012.

Aishwarya revealed that the script was written with Shruti Haasan in mind to play the female lead role but the actress was unavailable to do the film. Subsequently, Aishwarya signed on Amala Paul, after being impressed by her work in Mynaa. However Amala Paul was unavailable to start the film early and left the project, with Shruti Haasan joining the team after her Telugu film was delayed.

The single track "Why This Kolaveri Di", written and performed by Dhanush, was initially leaked in internet. Having noticed its popularity, the makers launched the song as a single. The song had become the most searched YouTube video in India by attracting more than 20 million views within 28 days, and was listed by YouTube under the "Recently Most Popular (Gold)" videos. This song has become the most trending topic in Twitter too. Many versions of this song created and uploaded by people in web and became popular. The Times of India listed out the Top 10 versions of the song. The word soup boys, which is used in this song, became the popular south Asian lingo and added in Urban dictionary.
