Volkswagen Formula XL1 Car | 313 Miles Per Gallon Diesel :
Professor Dr. Ferdinand Piëch, currently the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen AG, had a vision to make a car that was more practical for everyday life. He dreamed of a 1L car. The 1L car is one that would be able to go 100 km on 1 L of gasoline. Sure there have been concept cars released by other automobile manufacturers that have come close to this goal but the production costs of such a vehicle were usually so astronomical that they were never even considered for actual product. That is where Dr. Piëch is a true visionary. He and Volkswagen intend on making such a car an actual production every day vehicle.
The car itself sports a two cylinder TDI engine (35 kW / 48 PS), E-motor (20 kW / 27 PS), 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DSG) and lithium-ion battery. The car can plug into any ordinary household electrical outlet to recharge and uses all the previously developed recharging technology to recharge the battery as you brake or slow down. The results are spectacular. The car itself has a gas mileage of 0.9L / 100 km and can actually drive 35 km on electrical power alone (zero emission). When using both electrical and combustion motors, the car has an emission rate of 24 g/km of CO2. No word yet on the top speed of the car but hoping it is high enough to make it possible for roadway and highway travel.
