Burj
Dubai will be known by many names,
But only a privileged group of people will call it home.
Burj
Dubai (Arabic: برج دبي‎ "Dubai Tower") is a supertall skyscraper
under construction in the Business Bay district of Dubai, United Arab
Emirates, and is the tallest man-made structure ever built, despite being
incomplete. Construction began on September 21, 2004 and is expected to
be completed and ready for occupancy in September 2009.
The
building is part of the 2 km2 (0.8 sq mi) development called "Downtown
Dubai", at the "First Interchange" (aka "Defence Roundabout")
along Sheikh Zayed Road at Doha Street. The tower's architect is Adrian
Smith who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) until 2006. The
architecture and engineering firm SOM is in charge of the project. The
primary builders are Samsung Engineering & Construction and Besix
along with Arabtec.Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction
manager.
The
total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about US$4.1 billion and for
the entire new 'Downtown Dubai', US$20 billion. Mohamed Ali Alabbar, the
CEO of Emaar Properties, speaking at the Council on Tall Buildings and
Urban Habitat 8th World Congress, said that the price of office space
at Burj Dubai had reached $4,000 per sq ft (over $43,000 per sq m) and
that the Armani Residences, also in Burj Dubai, were selling for $3,500
per sq ft (over $37,500 per sq m).

Burj Dubai is
now the tallest structure in the world.
The
tower will house one of the first Armani Hotels.
Samsung Corporation from South Korea is the main building contractor.
Parts
of the Tower reach upwards in a helical shape with terraces, there are
26 in total.
The
amount of rebar used for the tower is 31,400 metric tons - laid end to
end this world extend over a quarter of the way around the world.
There
will be 200 meters of spectacular dancing fountains at the foot of the
Burj Dubai.
The
curtain wall of the Burj Dubai will be equivalent to 17 footbal (soccer)
fields or 25 American Footbal fields.
The
Burj Dubai's observatory elevators (double deck cabs) have a capacity
for 21 persons on each deck and will have the worlds longest travel distance
from lowest to highest stop. These elevators will travel at 10 m/sec.
When
completed, Burj Dubai will be the tallest building in the world in all
four categories recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urbab
Habitat (CTBUH), which complies and ranks the world's tallest buildings.
At
110 levels and 380 meters high, Burj Dubai shared the honour of having
the largest number of floors in any building in the world, alongside Sears
Tower in Chicago.
At
the peack cooling times the tower will require approximately 10,000 tons
of cooling per hours, which is equivalent to the capacity provided by
10,000 tons (22.5 million kg) of melting ice in one day.
The
tip of the spire can be seren by a person 95 km (60 miles) away.
Ten
cranes and the worlds fastest high-capacity construction hosts - with
a speed of up to 2 m/sec (120m/min) are used to move men and material.
The
Burj Dubai's water system will supply an averate of about 946,000 liters
(250,00 gallons) of water per day,
The
building service/fireman's elevator will have a capacity of 5,500 kg and
will be the worlds tallest service elevator.
Burj
Dubai will be the first mega high rise in which certain elevators will
be programmed to permit controlled evacuation for certain fire or security
events.
Vision
The goal of Burj Dubai is not simply to be the world's highest building.
It's to embody the world's highest aspirations.
